“The invitation to the Presidency is a political game” TIRANA - In a response to President Sali Berisha, the leadership of the Socialist Party declared yesterday that it would not take part in the 15 August meeting called by the head of state. According to this leadership, the elections of 26 May and 2 June are an unprecedented and irresponsible adventure, and therefore the boycott of central and local institutions will continue. The Socialist leadership also described Berisha’s invitation as a political game and expressed its belief that only a technical government with the opposition would lead the country to early and normal elections. (Continued on page 7) On page 7 TIRANA - As 15 August approaches, the day set by President Sali Berisha to meet the leaders of the political parties, the leadership of the Socialist Party declared yesterday that it will not take part in this meeting, which it considers a political game. Through the press office of this party, the united opposition responded yesterday to President Berisha’s invitation to the round table of parties on 15 August. In the response of the Socialist leadership it is said that “the invitation to the 15 August round table constitutes an unprecedented and irresponsible adventure for the organization of free and fair elections and the institutions that emerge from them.” The Socialist leadership once again refers to the elections of 26 May as “ghost elections” and to the act of 2 June as a failed and arrogant attempt to falsely legitimize the monist parliament. The statement says that “no position of any round table” can prevent or serve as a solution to the multi-dimensional crisis in Albania. According to it, Berisha continues to be the instigator of force and violence and an obstacle to a political solution to the crisis. “In the conditions where our boycott of central and local institutions continues as a result of manipulated elections, any participation in such a meeting would be inappropriate,” the statement says. According to the SP, the solution is the creation of a technical government with the opposition to organize early elections.

Trade unionists: “We want full bread compensation” At the Ministry of Labour The minister, the head of the Confederation and the union at the possible round table TIRANA - The Trade Union Assembly of Albania has asked the government to approve the new bread-compensation scheme for those who are considered unemployed. According to this assembly, this compensation should go into a special fund, to be administered by a special council made up of representatives of the Ministry of Labour, the trade unions and employment offices. At least that is what the public relations secretary, Mr. Nikollaq Konomi, said yesterday in a conversation with “Gazeta Shqiptare”, adding that this proposal will be submitted for discussion at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. The trade unionists’ demand comes after the significant increase in the price of bread in the country. (Continued on page 5) On page 5 TIRANA - Speaking about the issue of bread compensation for the unemployed, the public relations secretary of the Trade Union Assembly of Albania, Nikollaq Konomi, said that the trade unions are seeking full compensation for needy families and the unemployed. According to him, such a measure would ease the social consequences of the rise in the price of bread. He stressed that the solution cannot be sporadic, but that a sustainable scheme with special funds and joint administration must be created.
